Unfortunately I didn't make it to the Reading Festival this year - unfortunately so as I live a hop and a skip away from the festival site but it was still fun to watch on TV (while you can hear it all outside!). I was disappointed to miss the Foo Fighters (like most people!) but I was also really keen to see The Black Keys. So the disappointment was lessened when they announced a UK tour yesterday morning - December 12th at the o2 I'mma comin'!
I don't usually catch on to many new bands to be honest, you find that most just come and go with the trends, but you get the occasional gem which usually tend to be bands that have been slogging it out for years relatively unknown until they hit the well deserved big time. The Black Keys is one of those bands. I think I like them so much because they have their own distinct sound but are also reminiscent of old school classic sounding rock, particularly love their use of organs and their dirty riffs. I am familiar with and prefer a lot of their newer stuff, like 'Brothers' and 'El Camino' (I like to stress release by dancing around to Gold on the Ceiling like a loony) but I'm working my way through their back catalogue.
Hurry up December 12th! In the meantime, enjoy these (and do dance around like a loony to GOTC, trust me, you'll feel loads better for it :p).
Froucy and I FINALLY got to see Kiss after all this time on Wednesday. It was an intimate charity gig for Help for Heroes at the Kentish Town Forum. Probably one of the best gigs I've ever been to. As much as we both feel on a bit of a downer about life at the moment, the moment we get into an amazing gig, start singing and dancing and guitar leg-ging our hearts out none of that matters :)
One of the areas of my new job role is music. Music is already a massive part of my life but this now means I have to expand my horizons and step out of the old school rock and roll bubble that my musical taste exists in and start looking at more obscure and current bands...
Anyway this is not relevant to new and current bands but, on the subject, I've been hunting around for cool tracks suitable for show videos and getting reacquainted with the gorgeous-ness that is Maya Von Doll, of the Soho Dolls. She's now branched out on her own doing solo work (I was horrified to discover that she'd co-written that shitty Nicola Roberts 'Beat Of My Drum' song but we'll look past that..), but anywayyy - let's just marvel at her awesomeness -
I ADORE this new image from the SS11 French Connection campaign ("You are woman?"). Not only is the photography and outfit beautiful but it's so real! Yes, I may look like a beautiful stylish lady but I like BIG BURGERS and licking ketchup off my hands. She seems like my kinda girl. It's also reminded me I have a dress like that lurking in my wardrobe, hurry up summer.
On a slightly 'I am man' note, I was going to post some music which I haven't done in a while and the song reminded me of this photo from Soniphere festival 09, not my finest moment - not only do Jozef and I look ridiculously awkward - but I look just a little bit like a dude. Lady looks like a dudee! But obviously coming across Metallica's gear was one of my finest moments, I should have taken Froucy's advice and nicked one of Rob's basketball vests from the 'wardrobe' box...
Anyway, song of choice for today, my favourite song in the world. Metallica were the first band that really got me into music. I was watching a show at school that my sister was in and two guys played a guitar set and they sung this song and I was completely taken. So I begged for some allowance money (I think I was about 13 so this was in the days of complete parental reliance!) and bought the Black album and that's when my love affair with Metallica started! Yeahh, they have some cliche songs (Sandman anyone?) and please forget St Anger ever happened, but if you listen to some of the not so well known stuff you will see they really are the dogs bollocks. The S&M album also shows what brilliant musicians they are. When they played this at Sonisphere that year my boyfriend put me on his shoulders, what a guy - I literally nearly killed him, or broke his back, but it was the best fest moment ever.
So over the last couple of days I've read about the stirring rumours that the Stones may be headlining Glastonbury. Ok, so this happens most years but it seems to be a bit of a big possibility this year from recent interviews. Tickets are sold out and the re-release of cancelled tickets go in a bloody flash. I will be ridiculously gutted if this turns out to be true!
Anyway, on that subject, here's Angie for your enjoyment.
I love it when I come across new bands with an old sound - today I discovered Jettblack and immediately got on to telling Froucy about them - definitely one to get into! Check out 'Two Hot Girls' (below) and also 'Fooled By A Rose'
So last night I get into bed to read the special Jimi Hendrix special in the latest copy of NME. Now I have never bought NME because, as is probably obvious, I am not really into new music and I also find trendy indie music and the people in that scene kind of irritating. But the Jimi special enticed me. So I had a gloss over while I was drifting off and then saw an article that woke me right up -
The greatest guitarist of all time as voted by NME readers..... some guy from the fucking HORRORS!
I was appalled. And this increased my disliked for the 'new music' scene and it's followers even more - what on earth? To be fair I have never even listened to the Horrors but I could guarantee you that the floppy straightened haired fellow on the page does not deserve to even be there, let alone number 1!
Just to highlight the atrocity - Jimi was 4th, Slash was 8th, Brian May was 14th and beloved Keef was 15th.... I have no more to say on the matter....
I really enjoy Saturday mornings when I can wake up at an earthly hour and actually have some time to myself. Last five days have been a killer, been feeling pretty down at the moment along with getting home late and working so hard. Friday was a good'un though, got out and felt like myself again.
As usual, I'm having a Saturday music-morning. I get up, put on some good music, do whatever stuff I have to do (this morning is cleaning) and air drum/guitar and sing away. Don't you just love how music can make you feel so inspired?
